It was Hodgson's master plan. Losing to Iceland was far better than being trounced by France.

Having finally watched the France game after being out for most of the quarters, I'm surprised there hasn't been more comments, particularly in relation to England.

If no good came out of last week's debacle alone, then surely it has now after seeing what France did to the same opponents, as it will confirm if ever there was any doubt that England have hit rock bottom and a thorough root-and-branch reform is needed with yet another so called minnow not only no longer the easy cannon fodder of the past but emerging dangerously close in England's rear view mirror.

France were excellent, everything we were not during that dark night in Nice. Just looking at the beautifully worked out and executed goals alone, where are the England players that can make defence-splitting passes (goals #1 and #4), the reliable dead-ball specialists (#2 and #5), those with the vision to make space for themselves and shoot at tight angles with exquisite accuracy (as Payet did for #3)? Just one decent-ish free kick from Dier (our first direct FK at a major finals for ten years, says it all), a couple of scrambled goals vs Wales, and a penalty is what we had to offer.

And I don't buy the excuse or even explanation that we had a young squad and/or once again England players don't have the mentality to perform on the big stage. It was pure complacency and sloppiness that caused us to go behind in the first place after we seemed to think the game was already wrapped up with the early lead, and if the pressure of having to come from behind (which didn't seem to affect us vs Wales) caused the players to freeze, they were the architects of their own downfall, no one else (except maybe Roy, but even if our team clearly doesn't have the panache of France, the team he picked should have been good enough to be leading comfortably at half time, thus rendering the daft Wilshere substitution purely academic).

Once again though, it's a highly complex problem that isn't simply down to lack of world class players (and with Leicester winning the title at a canter and Wales reaching the semis at their first tournament for nearly 60 years with largely average players, even that shouldn't be that vital a factor), but a whole myriad of other things - lack of preparation, questionable team selections/tactics, lack of team spirit and leadership and inability to even do the basics when the going gets tough etc. I'm no footy expert and honestly have no idea where we should begin with this long-term reform (which we were seemingly promised after another disastrous tournament of Euro 2000 with the emerging "golden generation" but which never materialized), so over to you more knowledgeable guys to make suggestions!

It was not too long ago that we beat France and Germany in "friendlies" just proves these games count for nothing when it comes tourenment football.

Probably stuck to the same system they have used through out qualifying or in the French case friendlies, still unsure why Hodgson decided to change the system we used during the qualifiers.

I see that Jose Mourinho, a manager who's actually won things, more or less laughed at the notion of Wayne Rooney as a midfielder today.

Either Hodgson was forced to play him by the powers that be and as such shoehorned him in or he really was a managerial joke. Either way, leaving actual midfielders out to facilitate that past-it **** contributed to another pointless tournament experience.

I'm sure all those wonderful media personalities who referred to him after the Russia game as 'the best midfielder in the world' will be hastily backtracking.

This part interested me: "Gunter will tune into the wedding via Skype the day after the semi-final in order to deliver his best man speech."

So the wedding is the next day? They can't fly back after the match and arrive in Wales for the wedding?!

Wedding is in Mexico which is maybe part of the problem.

Well I thought that could be an option - probably more to this than meets the eye?

What are people's thoughts on the Wales Portugal game tonight, I cannot believe it but I think I will be cheering on wales, something I surprised about, I admit I am jealous of their achievements but don't feel bitter, I know if Engalnd were. in the the semi final the whole of Wales would be cheering on the opposition like their own team. Just wondering what the average fan think, I know the ones who get satisfaction from Engalnd losing will be cheering on Wales but wonder what the general feeling is. Not looked at the odds yet, but I think Portugal have had the luck in the tourenment and seem like a team that will crawl into the final, and maybe one too many games for Wales, especially with two big players missing, hope I am wrong, would be nice to see France win it in Paris after the problems they had last year.

I suspect unlike the vociferous few that most Welsh and Scottish people are indifferent about England's fortunes, I get the impression they hate the press more for bigging us up too much. Likewise I suspect past the jealousy that most English people are indifferent to Wales. For me I have Welsh and Scottish blood so I generally cheer on all 3 nations of this island but England come first.

I've wished for them to do well in the past, and had annoying Welshies then appear on Facebook in masses wishing that the opposition win against us. Even in some situations, wearing Argentina and Germany shirts.

I understand little nations get excited when people actually acknowledge that they are there, but it isn't worth the outpouring of repressed national pride.

    Hope they lose 14-0.

  23. Meh!

    Meh! Pre-Dictator

I always used to support home nations until I realised they all hated us.

Didn't Argentina shirts sell out in Scotland a few years back when we had them in a QF/SF?

Surely Germany did more to hurt these nations in their memorable recent past but if it was Germany vs England the Irish would be "900 years of oppression screw the English come on Germany". It's bred into most of them from birth to hate us more than anyone else.

I'm with you. All for the opposition against any home nation other than England, and screw all the suddenly wannabe welsh idiots searching through their genealogy in the vein hope that somewhere in the past 50 generations they had a welsh relative.

Amazing how many come out of the woodwork when they start winning isn't it? Same with the rugby, people you've grown up with at school, suddenly become Welsh through their great great great grandparents.

I was in an Irish Pub in Kilburn watching the England Germany semi final we lost on Pens and the Paddys celebrated like they had won the world cup, not banter, real hatred, one even said to me "Now **** off out our Country"

I was in New Zealand for the Lions Tour and the Hatred toward the English fans and English players really surprised me (by the Taffs mainly but also the Irish not the Kiwis) , the Taffs in France or at least the ones I met, 90% were top draw and the Northern Ireland fans were even better, and the Iceland were even better than that, saying that the Majority of the Russians were Ok.

I will be cheering on Wales tonight, something I never thought I would do, I know they would not do it for us, but I have total respect for them and especially Chris Coleman, most of their players are well up for it, I hope some of out players and the FA may learn something

The first time someone told me Wales actually still existed, I laughed and said, "Um, are you serious?" I thought it was gone like Gaul or the Aztec Empire. I was 16 or something. Anyway, I just can't get behind any team with Cristy Ronaldo on it. Viva La Wales

Great header and then a bit of good instinctive play - shame for Wales.

I heard on 5L,as I was washing my hair (so I may have misheard) it is Portugal's home match so Wales wear their 'charcoal' strip.

This however clashes with Portugal's first kit,so they both wear their second outfits.

    Very confusing,especially with wet hair!

I am surprised by the extreme reaction you experienced in Kilburn. I have watched England games in pubs in Ireland and it's more apathy than anything that is displayed. In a World Cup match England v USA, a crowded pub was unfazed when the US took the lead, other than my Scottish mate who was in ecstasy, jumping around. Everyone was looking at him, rather than the replay of the goal. Perhaps the Iceland game was not a good indicator of true feelings, as they were such underdogs that everyone (save English fans) were thrilled for them. Maybe the Irish in the pub were still sore about Brexit too. Anti English sentiment is certainly decreasing, but there will always be hardliners. They must all have gathered in a pub in Kilburn the night you were there.

Ive experienced some Irish over exuberance when it comes to England losing at.. well anything really! Welsh & Scots to. I never react at all in return.. and that usually winds them up no end ;)
