New La Liga TV deal announced

From 2016/16, a new law is coming into Spanish football affecting the selling of TV rights.

At present, all clubs are able to negotiate their own TV deals, obviously resulting in Real Madrid and Barcelona attracting huge sums of money whereas all others struggle - even Atletico Madrid, when the won the league last season, received less money than 20th placed Cardiff in the Premier League.

From the season after next:
All TV deals involving La Liga, the Segunda Division, the Copa Del Rey and Super Cup competitions are to be negotiated collectively
50% split evenly between all 20 La Liga clubs
40% split between La Liga clubs depending on performance and size
7% split evenly between Segunda Division clubs
3% split between Segunda Division clubs depending on performance and size

This is a massive change which, whilst it won't affect Barcelona and Real Madrid's dominance, may create a much more level playing field for the rest of the teams and genuinely allow them to become competitive. Hopefully Granada can go back up next season and reap the rewards of this.

That's good news for general competitiveness in La Liga outside of the big two.

I wonder what the formula is for the 40%? Or to put it another way, how much are RM and Barca going to take from that 40%?

 

This is excellent news. TV right money division in Serie A is quite bad compared to the strict "meritocracy" of Premier but at least is half decent.
The situation in Liga was a simple "might is right" that left only crumbles to the other teams other than the two superbig.

 

How is it allocated in Serie A?

 

Byzantine division aiming to satisfy all big and/or historical teams.

40% equal shares among all teams
5% results in last season
15% results in last 5 seasons
10% results since 1946 (sigh! we don't want Juventus-Milan-Inter to become poor if they have a prolonged bad period do we?)
5% population of the city (we don't want Roma-Lazio-Napoli to be unhappy, do we?)
25% number of fans (estimated by means of opinion polls commissioned by Football League)

Juventus getting nearly 3 times more than Udinese seems pretty stupid.

I do find it quite interesting that the only Italian club that will earn more TV money than Watford next year is Juventus, though. The others will all get less than us...and if we stay up next year, even Juventus will be dwarfed.

 

Did not know this had changed for next season, great news for the Spanish leagues, bet real and Barcelona were not happy, to think that the champions of Spain earn less than a relegated premiership team is a bit of a concern.

 

In Spain the split will be more like Italy's ie for big teams/historical.
But they are also giving a % to womens football and 'other' sports.

83% of all money goes to LA Liga
of that
50% equal parts
from the remaining 50% for la liga 25% will be based on the last 5 years results and 25% on size of club, members, tv audience, etc

2nd div teams will get 10% - 70% based league finish and 30% on size of audience, classification and members.

3.5% will be for a parachute payment for relegated teams.

For the last 5 years bit the last season accounts for 35%, second last 20% and the other 3 seasons 15%.
also to be taken into account on these 5 season there is a % ratio to be taken into account, so thye champions get 17%, 2nd 15% and last 0.25%.

1% for the LFP - The league
2% for the RFEF - Spanish FA
0.5% will be for 2B teams,womens football and the Footballers Association.

As always with Spanish football a bit of a mess!!!

My thoughts too. All totally irrelevant other than to keep certain clubs sweet.

 

Exactly, and you see the results in the table image I posted above.
Juventus, e.g.: even if it should finish mid-table for ten years in a row, they would continue to have a huge sum due to historical results and number of fans througout Italy.
Small teams like Udinese or Sassuolo, even if they should win five tournments in a row, would still earn much less.

 

And now the league could be suspended in dispute with the Spanish government.

This is Spain we do things very different, The FA are not happy they are not getting what they think is a fair share of the new TV rights so have called a stop to games from not this weekend but next, to obviously leave time to negotiate. La liga are taking the FA to court as they say that they have no right to call a halt to games. The government aren't happy with FA either as they say they are just playing games.
The head of the Spanish FA Villar, he is high Up in FIFA and is as crap as Blatter....say no more.
Outcome.... who the fark knows.

 

Worth rigging the opinion polls. Go to Mali and get the whole country to sign up as Zebra fans. Spend half the extra TV money building villages and schools. Keep half for Udinese.
