TV rights money in England and Italy

    Interesting.
According to italian wiki division among the teams:

    Premier League:
    50% equally among all teams
25% proportional to last season results
25% proportional to estimated number of fans

    Serie A:
    40% equally among all teams
25% proportional to estimated number of fans
5% proportional to population of home city
15% proportional to results in last 5 years
10% proportional to results from 1946 until 6 years before
5% proportional to results in last season.

That is, a byzantine method aiming to guarantee that whatever happens on the football fields, the "big ones" Juventus, Inter and Milan (and after them also Roma, Napoli and Lazio) are perfectly safe financially, while a team like Udinese (or Vicenza, Sampdoria, Verona and other "miracle" teams from smaller cities in the past) only gets the crumbs.
It's no wonder that Pozzo's aim is to have WFC in Premier League ASAP: at least (and at last) a place where merit, and not "history", is rewarded.

Or the size of the town. What a daft way of splitting the cash.

The tv companies give more appearances to teams they know they will get a big audience from such as teams with big fan bases.

Yes clearly but that's totally different to "25% proportional to the estimated number of fans"

Yes, I included source as it is not "sure", being an italian wiki regarding something in England.
Yet the share among teams in England seems reasonably "meritocratic".
While the "rules" for Italy as described are quite correct I think, and clearly aiming to perpetuate financial security for the "big" teams (for history and/or for being from the biggest cities).

I'd be curious to know from the friends from Granada in this forum how are things in Liga.
If Premier League is a "democracy" and Serie A an "oligarchy", Liga appears to have just two obvious rulers, with all the others in secondary roles. Are they generous or greedy rulers?

They should do something similar like in the MLS whereby the teams who do less well get the first picks in the ameteur player draft, they should reward the lesser finishing teams more, and eventually it'd even itself up.

Then youd get something happening like in the olympics where you throw games for a better draw??

    ***** please, Spain:

    10% to rest of clubs

    Mhh ... short-sighted policy IMHO.
So RM and Barcelona 140M€ each, 48 to the third and then low and low until just 13M€ for Racing, probably barely enough to survive and pay the salaries (maybe not).

Being one of the "customers" that contribute to the TV rights money of Liga and PL with my satellite TV fees, I can express some opinions:
    - of course it's more likely I'll watch a match on TV with Real or Barcelona rather than, say, Osasuna-Levante
    - BUT if at same time there's a Premier league match, it's much more likey I'll follow the match of a "real" tournement where even the stronger teams have to fight for every point, rather than a "doh, one of the Liga big ones against on of the comprimaries, let's see if they win just 3-0 or 8-1".
So there's definitely a reason if, from the links seen above, the total sum of TV rights money is much higher for PL than for Liga.
The two liga giants should understand that a tournement where only the two "clasico" are decisive matches becomes boring and is bad for business, so they should limit their greed and leave to the other teams something more than the crumbs.

I'll say you that some supporters start thinking to ask their teams to play against both teams with B team. "If they want to decide La Liga in 2 matches, let's help them". Some years ago, teams went to Camp Nou or Bernabeu thinking that, fighting, they will be able to win. Now, you must do a perfect match, RM or BCN a bad game, and you must do it as late as u can, so the referee can't help them. (You know, penalties, red cards...)

    Interesting...
The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

MLS has quite a few issues with appealing to a global audience due to the Salary Cap which stifles the ability to attract and retain broad levels of talent (outside the Henry's or Beckham's). However, the Salary Cap and the 'Single Entity' nature of the contracts the league holds with the players has kept all the teams mostly equal financially, and all the teams have a stake in the success of the others. All this was based on tryng not to repeat the NASL-era bubble that destroyed American soccer for decades.

I absolutely love the solution the Pozzo family has come up with to make their teams more competitive in their respective leagues. I can't wait to see how it develops here at WFC.

The situation in Spain is barmy. Sooner or later the old firm there will realize as in Scotland that it is detrimental to hold all the cards. The need to thrash out a collective TV deal that is far more equitable.

Unless of course the evil G17 are still considering a European Superleague in which case to them domestic competitions won't matter at all. All I can see uis these so called bigger clubs in their greed and pride destroying the fabric of the game.
