Hmmm Cuba. Could be a good call for my Winter hols this year.

I love Commie countries which hate America, following my trips to Venezuela and Nicaragua recently.

Well they definitely hate the Americans, but love the old American cars, Coke and imported Pringles (for those who can afford it). They were quite apologetic about it to be honest, and seemed to have calmed down on the old Che stuff. I must admit, I loved the big bill board signs everywhere in the countryside though about him and the revolution. They still believe old Fidel to be alive as well, even though there are always rumours of his demise. I got to sit next to vice president apparently on a sun lounger as he was staying at the same hotel as me, I only realised as they was a big ex-boxer sort sat next to me who looked at though he could have walked away with the 88 Heavyweight boxing title, with 2 guns on him sat another seat away and then it seemed every member of the hotel staff manning the pool bar in the next minute!

Moog, if you do go to Cuba, tour around, see a bit of the place. Vinales out in the countryside not far from Havana is possibly the most stunning place I have visited, ended up doing a 2 day walking trip up there. Also the winter time is definitely when it is at is most busiest, when the Canadians take over Cuba, by the end of my stay, they were everywhere.

I have also decided that I will say I am on my honeymoon every holiday in future, you get spoilt rotten and no-one checks! The Mrs wondered why I was so keen to join her in the free spa treatment until the female masseuse turned up with an arse and toned stomach that Shakira would be envious of!

Interestingly those that were willing to talk about it/I felt confident asking had mixed opinions. I stayed in a casa in Havana who had lived through the revolution and they gave an account that although Batista was bad he only became more radical and murderous when the revolutionaries threatened to overthrow him and the revolution had not really helped the people. Equally, someone complained that although the nationalisation of the sugar industry had great benefits the party were wrong to later stop its production. But the overwhelming impression I got was that most were positive of the revolution as it removed the American yoke but there is a tension there as most feel that after Che dies something will radically change, and I think most know that Cuba needs to radically change as its economy is dying a slow death.

Vinales is beautiful, really green and mountainous. Went horse riding there (first time in my life) and ended up in this shack with an old man who produced his own cigars, he showed me how he made them and then asked me to share a cigar with him. I then couldn't believe it, he didn't ask me to buy any or pay for this one cigar, or pressure me to make a purchase but instead I asked him if I could buy some as they were so good.

I'm really glad you had a great time

Thought I'd drag this thread back up as it's coming round again.

I'm off to NYC next Monday, not this Monday (obvs) anyone got any suggestions? besides the more obvious things. Got 4 nights, already booked Yankee's tickets, Matilda tickets at Broadway (not my choice) and Empire state tickets.
Heading off to Naples in Florida after for a bit of sun.

Haha, just noticed this, will bring them with me on Monday and if we win, the cigars are on me!

Off on another trip in July and August this year, but the opposite side of the world, 2 days in Beijing, 5 in Hong Kong, 2 in Bangkok and 8 in Phuket. Staying with relatives in Hong Kong but not booked anywhere near Phuket yet, if anyone has any tips on some idyllic wilderness escape, it would be appreciated!

Buy a city bus tour ticket, we bought a 3 day one; it's a hop on hop off service and there are four different routes, if you can't manage all four skip the Brooklyn leg, there's not much to see there. You get to see virtually every thing there is to see in New York on these tours and all the buses have tour guide commentary on board. By the way make sure you go on the open top upper deck, you don't get to see much downstairs.

A cheap way to see the Statue of Liberty is to take the Statten Island Ferry, it's free. Just get on go over and don't bother to get off on Statten Island, just come straight back. You get a great view of the statue, both ways.

However, obviously you don't get to see it as close as you would if you take one of the official tours, which land you on Liberty Island and you can walk around as much as you like, and you can catch any boat back, not just the one you came on; Ellis Island is also worth a visit, and can be visited on the same boat cruise.

I strongly recommend you consider the Philippines for your holidays. It's still cheap compared to western countries (half litre bottle of beer 50p, 20 Marlboro 50p, jeepney and trike rides a few pence). Wonderful friendly people, stunning beaches, famous nightlife. Might add I know of a three bedroomed house in Angeles to rent for about £50 a night....much bigger and better value than an hotel room. Happy to give anyone specific information on Phils; best thing I did was move here.

Saving for a 3 month jolly to South America next year and hopefully fitting the World Cup in, so keeping it relatively low key. Week away in the south west with the girlfriend's family, week in Spain with mine.

£250 for a flight to Spain on easyjet. Pathetic. We booked in a bit of a rush but in hindsight I wish I'd driven down there with one of my brothers and his wife. Probably save a couple of hundred between us or at least see a few things and new places on the way.

Cheers VOR, definitely going to do the ferry. The statue is closed anyway at the moment because it got damaged in hurricane sandy!

Beware the tour guides literally mugging you for a tip though - and they really don't appreciate anything less than $20 per person.

I forgot to mention there is another tour called the "NYC Duck" which is a converted WW2 amphibian landing craft that does a road tour around Manhattan island then goes out onto one of the rivers, I think it's the Hudson, though I can't remember for sure, so you get to see the city from the river, it's a good trip.

Also it's not worth going up both the "Empire State Building" and "The Rockefeller Building", although I have been up both of them on different occasions, on different visits to NYC!!! Of the two I preferred "The Rockefeller"

I'm going to Tunisia next month for a week. Nothing interesting, just an easy, short flight holiday with my 1 year old daughter and my pregnant wife.

I miss the days when my wife and I could just go on Sky Scanner, find the cheapest flights to a random country and book them, then sort everything else out on arrival.

Had a long weekend in Budapest in February which was great, but now in need of sunshine so heading to Bodrum in September. I've never fancied Turkey before but I've heard so many good things I thought it was worth a visit. Also booked a trip to the Nuremberg Christmas markets for December as well. I seem to have developed a want for travel as I am edging towards my 30's.

Going to Centerparcs for the 1st time ever in July. My lad is only 2 and a half so still in that stage of uncertainty about taking him on a plane, plus most holidays abroad for a week were coming in STUPIDLY expensive! Anyone been to the Elveden one before?

My daughter has just turned 1 and will be flying for the 4th time in 2 weeks. Maybe I'm lucky with her, but I've found that she's fine for flights up to 4 or 5 hours.

There are plenty of really cheap overseas package deals. depends on your budget bit a family of three can easily fly somewhere for under a grand all inclusive.
