Lots of little breaks this year. Going to Poland to watch the Euros, then Euro Disney for a long weekend. Woolacombe in north Devon for a few days is planned too. I'm in Canada and Spain a lot with work, so I tend to take a break in Barcelona and take in a few of their matches. Will take some time out in Toronto and stay in my log cabin in a place called Bob's lake. It's very remote and a great way to switch off completely.

Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort & Spa is where we are staying. Meant to be brilliant according to the the reviews. I am not too sure how busy the whole area is though, hence why we are spending a bit of time in Havana as well. The pictures we have seen look amazing though.

I was looking at that hotel but opted with the cheaper Brisas Guadalavaca instead.
Just been on trip advisor and its got me too excited.

Have you been reading up on what you need etc?
    Seems very strict!

You have to show insurance docs on arrival don't you and you have to pay a fair bit to leave I think?

  8. Emmawfc

    Emmawfc Graphical Genius

Yeah 25CUC per person when you leave! And you can only get CUC in Cuba :/

I love Devon too, I know north Devon better but had a great week in sth Devon 3 months after my eldest was born, out of season walking the coast paths, we found the hope and anchor and enjoyed a couple of nice pub lunches in there. On one visit a seal was giving birth to her pups on the 'beach'.

Clovelly is worth a visit, but I think you should tone down your expectations a little to avoid disappointment!

I still love to go back to Croyde, perhaps because of the childhood memories down there, but it is a cracking spot.

Big fan of Croyde. Some decent pubs and cracking waves. Genuinely loved living in North Devon, although it was a bit of a ghost town in the winter. Very grim.

I've been in the Hope & Anchor many a time and it's always been great. When we played away at Plymouth in the cup quarter final I stayed there after the game and it is probably the nicest hotel room I've been in, unbelievably relaxing and a great location.

I will keep an open mind when it comes to Clovelly though!

Cuba is amazing, I spent a month there last summer. Havana is good fun, and if you have a chance there is also a place called Trinidad which is quite popular. But if you have a license there are some great scuba diving spots or if you go into a fancy hotel they will do a package. Where are you staying in Havana? I stayed in a casa but the buses stopped at the major hotels so I went into most of them

OK a couple of things Cuba is actually quite easy to travel around (although it is done by official apartheid measures such as special tourist coaches), yes you have to pay 25 CUC to leave (but that's only £20 per person each), I never had to show my insurance docs (although I would advise getting insurance). Guadalavaca is nice-there's a good scuba place, I spent two nights there in a villa as it was cheaper and there was a nice restaurant on the beech near a rock peninsular. Currency-yes it's hard to get off the official currency and tbh there's little point in getting off, we managed a couple of times but that's because we didn't stay in hotels but in people's houses. Cuba can be done quite cheaply-just make sure you know what CUC's look like, peso pizza's are great for lunch and very cheap (a peso). I had a fantastic time and over 4 weeks travelled to about 8 different places using official coaches, taxis and illegal taxis

    Thanks for that, Adam.
My boyfriend is a keen scuba diver having been on a couple of scuba holidays so he will love it.
Me on the other hand....I wont go in the sea due to my MASSIVE fear of sharks!

Emma do-although admittedly i'm sure it's in Guadalavaca where you can feed the sharks but if you are going to other places there won't be sharks. Or alternatively i went snorkelling and that was actually really good (usually I find it a bit tame but the clarity of the water was amazing and obviously you don't go deep enough for their to be sharks!)

Where are you going? Are you just going to Guadalavaca?

I will paddle and thats about it. I dont even go in the sea in England!
We went to Cornwall in september and I wouldnt go surfing because I remembered once they saw a great white shark in Padstow!

Yeah we are just going to Guadalavaca. Staying at the Brisas. Dont know if you've heard of it.

If you have the lonely planet I stayed in the Villas so I don't know of the hotels but when I was driven there the taxi driver pointed out where all the hotels were and it looked nice.

Because there are bullsharks in those.

Adam, thanks for the info, top man! I do have my scuba licence but have not kept up with it but the the soon to be wife is a massive scuba fan and dives all the time on holiday. As it is the honeymoon, we will most likely be splashing about on once in a lifetime things like swimming with Dolphins but if there is a chance of Shark feeding, I will be right on that as always wanted to have a go.

We are all-inclusive at the hotel in Guadalavaca but in Havana we decided to go and explore and so just B&B (I prefer the travelling around stuff myself but she wasn't too keen for this break!). We are staying in the Parque Central which seems to be highly rated in the old part of the city near the Museo de la Revolucion I believe.

I stayed near there, I was at the top on the boulevard, yep right near the museum-go but be warned it's not air-conditioned. I made the mistake of going in there (i'm fascinated by Cuban revolution so wanted to see everything) to escape the heat-only to find it was almost as hot as outside! So take water (in fact always carry a bottle of water with you!) Other gems in Havana: top of the boulevard, turn left down the Malecon-it's beautiful as the sun is going down. And across the Harbour they have a show in the evening (I can't remember if it's every day or just one day) but it's an old colonial fort and it's well worth it! Also go to the squares-there is one (I think the largest) where you can sit outside and have beer in this column in the middle of the table and it's pretty cheap

Well just back from Cuba, timed the honeymoon to perfection, back in time for the football tonight! The new Mrs Timbers thinks I planned it somehow, now the problem is, I haven't slept now for a day and a half, do I go for a hours kip now and risk not getting up for the game?

Adam was totally right about Cuba, Emma, you will love it. The diving is ace and Havana is worth a few days for Pesso Pizza and Mojito's in Cuba are absolute quality, completely different to the how they do them over here. Good quality rum was about 3 quid a bottle and I have a box full of cigars for people to celebrate our promotion at the end of the season if anyone is interested:)
