Sorry, it's the English teacher within me.

Ah, if you're referring to the original founder then fair dos! I'm fine with that :drinking:

Excellent. If you're fine with it now I'll go and change it.

Does vBulletin have any support for a dark/night mode?

  4. hornmeister

Yes it does. Exactly the same as for Light/day mode. Ambient conditions and or time will not affect the forum.

In post match comments threads would it be possible to introduce some way of asking posters to indicate if they actually attended the game or not? This would save time not reading the views of those who didn't go, listened on the radio or watched on a live stream. I'm sure such a development would be popular.

Even if such a thing was possible I query its validity and it would be impossible to police.

You also need to appreciate that you get a different view of the game, sometimes a more well rounded one if you've watched the whole thing on TV or listened to commentary. Everyone's opinion is valid.

  7. Lloyd

Personally I don't feel that an opinion on a match is valid unless someone was there live and I'm sure most fans do not share your 'all-inclusive' theory. I reckon it would be technically simple to allow posters to click an icon or similar so we know who the armchairs are. Perhaps an armchair icon for the stay-at-home commentators? Give it some thought

How can you say that? The main advantage of being at a game is getting a feel for the atmosphere and maybe witnessing a few off the ball incidents you would not see on TV. Apart from that, on TV you have the benefit of instant replays, plus you see exactly the same as people in the ground and I'd argue from a better angle on TV generally.

So to say that someone does not have an opinion unless they were at the match is just bizarre. You do release that for some people getting to the matches (or one match) is pretty difficult if not impossible? So to say that because of this [that they can't attend] makes their opinion invalid shows your comment is ill thought out at best, and probably deeply unfair. You would prejudice their opinion because their circumstances do not allow them to attend?

I personally am not interested in what the armchairs have to say - regardless of their reasons/excuses for not attending. All I am asking for is some means of highlighting whether or not someone was actually at the game or not so that I - and others who feel the same way - do not have to waste time reading their views. That's all

For policing, perhaps we could say that you have to have a selfie in the stand with the day's newspaper.

Also, I think that if you go to the game you should get bonus 'Orns. Say 1000 for each post match comment for home games, 2000 for away games. The more points you have, the bigger Watford fan you are. It makes sense right?

My point isn't about proving who's the 'biggest fan' nor am I suggesting that the opinions of those fans that do not go to a game are not entitled to have an opinion on it. I'm just saying that I'm not interested in their opinion and it would be useful to have some method of highlighting 'non attenders' in post match review threads so I - and others of a similar view - can scroll post their comments.
To put this in to some kind of context, I'm sure everyone has listened to a radio football phone-in and let out an audible groan when someone calls in from Surrey purporting to be a Manchester Utd fan and gives their ill-informed opinion of the team's latest performance - despite not being at the game. The parallels are obvious...

This is a good idea but doesn't go far enough. I think you should have to declare, and provide proof of, how many games you've attended before you are allowed to register on the forum in the first place. Then, there should be different levels of membership. Those who are "unable" to go to many games (eg coming up with the pathetic excuse that they live abroad or have young families) might be allowed to register but anything they write would automatically be "blocked" to those real fans who go to every game,so they don't have to suffer their views.
    Meister, sort it please.

Because you're at the game and not on the live chat I'm not interested in your opinion on the forum setup.

So if Sir GT watched a game on TV or in the Sky studio for example you wouldn't care what he said about it because he wasn't in the ground?

Whilst you are of course entitled to your opinion, it just seems a really weird one to me, like you hold a grudge or have a chip on your shoulder. What do you feel that being at the ground gives you power and knowledge over others? I'm genuinley interested to know. There are many out there who have been to loads of games in past, but now can't (I admit this is me) so now because of this you don't like what they have to say, even if it is reasonable?

Happy, I’ve gone as far as to propose a scoring system for this:

Category A: Goes to all home and away games = 2000 points per post attended match comment
Category B: Goes to all home games and 6 or more away games = 1500 points per post attended match comment
Category C: Goes to all home games and less than 6 away games (including none) = 1200 points per post attended match comment
Category D: Goes to 50% of home games and 6 or more away games = 1200 points per post attended match comment
Category E: Goes to 50% home games and less than 6 away games (including none) = 800 points per post attended match comment
Category E: Goes to less than 50% home games and 6 or more away games = 800 points per post attended match comment
Category F: Goes to less than 50% home games and less than 6 away games (including none) = 300 points per post attended match comment
Category F: Armchair supporter = minus 500 points per post attended match comment

I’ve weighted the away games higher in importance, i.e. someone who only attends 50% of home games but more than 6 away games is ranked as important as someone who attends all home games but no away games, even though they’ve in actual fact got less game time attendance minutes under their belt. Makes sense right.

To qualify you need to specify what your plans are at the start of the season and your points will be awarded straight away for each post. You will then be required to provide proof that you were at the required amount of the games that you specified pre-season.

Any games not attended will incur a retrospective deduction of points that you’d receive for the category that you eventually fall under.

Mods – anyway we can pro-rata this for the rest of this season.

I think it is you who comes overs a little chippy, if I may say so. I am not suggesting anyone is stopped from having their say, just that they identify themselves as having not witnessed what they are commenting on. Simple stuff - not in any way suggested aggressively, smugly or as means of expressing "power and knowledge" as you somewhat bizarrely believe. Just an idea that, in my view, would improve this site - nothing more or less

    StuBoy Forum Cad and Bounder

Nah, I'm just not a fan of your opinion personally but do not begrudge you having it, after all it is your right. Just interested to understand why you think like that.

On the power and knowledge thing maybe you're right, remove the 'power' part of it, but my point on the knowledge over others still stands. I don't think that is a bizarre suggestion.

I think someone watching a stream of the game has a hell of a better view than someone in the front row of the 1881 for example. At home matches I sit high up and bang on the half way line so get a much better view overall than 95% of anyone else in the ground, but being there doesn't always give you a better perspective, quite the opposite.

LIfe would indeed by dull if we all had the same view. I am not suggesting that going to games gives someone greater 'knowledge'! At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, my view is simple - people who were actually present at an event are far better placed to comment on it than someone who watched it on tv or listened to it. When it comes to football match reviews/opinions, I personally am not interested in the opinions of those that weren't at the game. That's it

    I was wondering..

Youve no doubt got your reasons but why does the match threads disappear so quickly from the 'Hornets Nest'? I know they get moved to the matchday section but wouldnt it be an idea to keep the current match thread up in the main section until the next game is played?

  25. hornmeister

    hornmeister Tired

I get where you're coming from.

We're trying to promote the Match Day section as an archive. As such whilst the threads are still active it's an advertising tool to get the section more used by placing the redirects. If the threads stayed in the main section they'd quickly get lost added to that sticky space in the main section is a at premium. We also don't want to deflect away from the next match. It;s a manual thing and generally happens when I remember:)

It's the same reason for shutting the shoutbox down on the final whistle. It keeps the match thread fresh and stored the comments for history rather than losing them.

    Ah brilliant.

Really helps to remember what you have said in a thread, so you don't get WatfordTalk'd about it later.
