As I understand it, regarding the main point of free agency, neither side truly won. if a player is waived or their contract runs out they enter a new type of draft. On the surface it look like the players won, but if it's like other drafts it will only change the team getting compensated.

Yes we do. The arrival of the three players was a bit of a surprise to us, since we have 'agreements' with many teams that are totally useless and meaningless, including Chelsea, and Necaxa of the Mexican League IIRC. Nothing usually comes of these partnerships except a friendly every once in a while. I saw these three Brazilians in a friendly last week against Costa Rican club Puntarenas FC and they are young and raw, but will probably do quite well for us.

Today is the final pre-season match against Aguilas of the El Salvadoran league. It will be as close to the season long starting lineup as possible and I expect all three Brazilians to get time, and two to start.

I'm not sure which aspects of it you think are Junk, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion on the matter. But two things about the article:

The author is English. He is often bashed by local soccer fans for being too harsh on Team USA and the Galaxy in particular. There are many American non-MLS soccer fans who screamed out criticism of Green's article in much the same manner you are.

On the other hand, it pretty closely captures the majority of Galaxy fan's opinions on the matter.

Well, there's the bit about it being his second major injury while signed for Galaxy but playing for another team because of the injury he got playing for Madrid. As far as I understood it he was still under contract at Madrid at that point and, as harsh as the football gods are, it's just bad luck if a player you've agreed to sign for nothing 6 months down the line picks up an injury in the meantime.

Following on from that I can't seriously see how he can be blamed for the hype that Galaxy/MLS whipped up about his arrival. It's not like he personally sat down and set the ticket prices!

It says Galaxy gave him a chance when he was at a low ebb and unwanted elsewhere, yet Madrid tried to convince Galaxy to let them keep him and he'd have basically had his pick of Premier League clubs (possibly with the exception of Man Utd) had he expressed a serious wish to come back.

He may not be the single most technically accomplished player this country has produced in decades but the fact is he's played football consistently at a high level for over a decade, been involved with the most successful teams, won stuff and captained his country. In respect of England the competition for his place in the team has been fleeting at best these last few years. I'd love the author to name the amazing talent his selection has caused to be overlooked. If he were to say Shaun Wright-Phillips I fear I might actually die of laughter.

The fact is a player can't be considered a key player for AC Milan and be crap. However, the concept that he was going to rock up in LA and turn a team of cloggers into world beaters was always unlikely to play out well. Only in America! Which is why the article made me chuckle - it's not commitment and production that's valued on your side of the pond, it's the chasing the dream aspect. His signed gave others ridiculous levels of hope and it's proven to be flop. Ergo it must be his fault. Maybe MLS and the game over there in general needs to look at itself if a player like Beckham, who moves there in his prime, essentially ends up making a mockery of it. I can't see anyone else moving there in their prime any time soon.

Super boring 0-0 game last night against El Salvador's Aguilas.
The G's defense and keeping were strong but the attackers couldn't quite click and it was interesting watching Donovan visibly frustrated with the new guys. It really must be tough to be back down on the farm after living in the 'big city' so to speak.

I reckon we could well be seeing Donovan in an Everton shirt again in the near future, Fitz. I don't know if you saw the interview but on MOTD he pretty much said he wouldn't mind coming back.

He seemed to really fit in well there. While it won't be until at the earliest the conclusion of this MLS season, I do think he'll go there at some point...y'know, to retire.

Here's an enlightening article on why the MLS Players Association fought so hard and threatened a strike during the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations:
Players still left without freedom of movement

    MLS Season has begun!
First Kick is Seattle vs new team Philadelphia at Seattle.

    Ben...rough start.

    Let's begin with the good:
    The Union's uniforms look sharp.

    The bad:
    Defense is really shaky.
    No connection in the midfield.
Giving up a quick goal is not good for you.
Red card by middle aged rookie from Scandinavia? What?
You can't be blamed for that rapist Montero's gorgeous rapish header, but somebody's gotta put a man on the opponent's forward on set pieces.

They looked scared and even out of place, but Seattle is good and Qwest is a tough place to play in. You got nowhere to go but up and it's a long season...

    Final
    Seattle 2:0 Philadelphia
    Evans 12' goal for Seattle
Stahl red card 40' for Philadelphia
    Montero 42' goal for Seattle

Indeed! Tune in Thursday at 8pm Pacific Time for the LA Derby, Galaxy vs Chivas. The Superclasico is very early this year, but that's good for us, I think.

I think I am 3rd row on that side.

Be careful what you wish for, Ben...

TONIGHT is the first LA derby!

My boss called at 10am and told me to take a half day and reminded me of something I forgot: Friday is a company holiday (why does a Japanese company care when Jesus croaked?) so I am headed to the pre-game pubbing early and don't have to worry about paying for it tomorrow...

    Go Galaxy!

    I think it was.
    Decent game...
    LA 2-0 Chivas

Edson Buddle has scored all 3 Galaxy goals so far.

    EDIT:
Edson's goal scoring celebration looks a little like a Hitler imitation from this perspective. I'm really not sure what he was doing...

Still the fans seem to love it. Check out the kid bottom right...

I hope he does well for you, but though he was a legend for the G's the first time around, Fish stunk things up at the G's the second time around. You should get his partner at Puebla and former G's star Herc Gomez instead.

    That kid is on fire!
Gomez scores 8th goal in 10 games for Puebla

Would love to bring in Gomez but i feel like he some how is up for transfer.. and the USMT fan in side me wants him to keep banging in goals in Mexcio so i don't have to see C. Casey at the world cup.

    Good win, Ben.

The Sons of Ben were impressive tonight.

The goal the Union gave up to make it 2-2 was, um, legendary. Something tells me he won't be getting the start next week.

    In other news:
    Galaxy 2-0 Ho's

2 goals for Edson Buddle, which makes 5 for the season for him...he's 1/3 the way to the Golden Boot and it's just the 3 week point.

    Also, NO goals against yet.

    To sum up:
    3-0 this season.
    E. Bud scored all 5 goals this season.
    0 goals against.

I think you and he would get along quite well.

I think he was caught mid yawn or sneezing...

Remember I've seen many of you at the Vic...you got no room to cast aspersions.

Yes, he is the target. Much maligned by many of the 'faithful' until his run of form now.

    Goals
    Regular Season only
    Rank Player G
    01 Jaime Moreno... 131
    02 Jeff Cunningham 121
    03 Ante Razov..... 114
    04 Jason Kreis.... 108
    05 Taylor Twellman 101
    06 Landon Donovan.. 96
    07 Carlos Ruíz..... 89
    08 Roy Lassiter.... 88
    09 Raúl Díaz Arce.. 82
    10 Preki........... 79

    Who's #11 with 78? Buddle. I think he'll finish this season in 9th place.

He has always been a streaky scorer, and this fits into his MO. Two years ago, under Gullitt, I think he got something like 3 hat tricks. Mike Magee is the other striker, usually, and Landon runs that attacking mid spot, often hitting the opponent with that overlap catching them with their pants down and covering Magee...
