2009 is over, and the preparations for 2010 are under way.

Philly has a new team, Toronto's BMO Field will have the artificial turf removed and replaced with the real thing, New York has a new stadium, The Revolution are still big losers, The Galaxy will be missing their two best players for half the season again, and Chivas sucks hard.

    What else ya got?

I think he's a very good player. Strong, reasonably fast. He enjoyed great success at Aalborg (AaB) - he captained the side to a surprise Danish championship in 2008. AaB let him go - primarily I think due to his wage demands.

He went to FC Midtjylland and struggled to get in the side. I think he just lost confidence and if the Union can reinstall that into him they have a real assett.

IMO i don't think the loan move to everton was a good idea.. what he is going to prove... just signed a new contract.. and is not going to move untill the world cup which is what alot of clubs are going to evalute him on.. he is going to have little rest between now and the world cup

I understand the impulse to be cautious about Donovan going to England especially after not doing much twice at Leverkeusen and just staying fit at Bayern, but it's a really great chance for him leading up to the World Cup.

He gets to stay in playing fit condition.
He gets to scope out up close and personal the character of English football and see some of the actual players he will face in the World Cup.
He gets a chance to learn a few football tricks from a different point of view.

I watch LD week in and week out. The guy is in awesome shape and at his age, doesn't really need rest for the 6 months between now and the World Cup.

Apart from tactical things on the pitch, the big knock on LD is that he tended in the past to psych himself out, and let things in the environment affect his play on the field...you always hear him refer to things being ' very comfortable for me' which is a part of the fragile mindset.

He's grown up a bit now and I ::believe:: he is starting to not let things bother him so much now and is far more focused on what he's doing to be successful on the field. I think he sees that being a top class athlete is a very fleeting thing, and that he only has a few more years left to do it.

I think he's on the right track.

Do you think he can do his wonders in the Premiership, Fitz?

We'll see. He's a wonderful player and I really really hope he does well. I'd love it.

The rest is up to him.

Meanwhile, here is a commercial he made for the Mexican National Lottery.
It's probably not only not comprehensible but also not funny to you Englanders, but trust me...the idea of Landon "The Mexicutioner" Donovan sneaking INTO Mexico, just like so many Mexicans sneak into the USA is genius...

Particularly once you know Mexico is a place where he is universally recognized (unlike his home country) and universally hated for knocking Mexico out of the World Cup in 2002 and frustrating them at every turn...oh yeah, it is pretty funny.

Donovan starting for Everton...I can't believe I am awake and watching it, especially given the fact i fell asleep 4 hours ago after hitting the Red Car last night.

Strong performance from Donovan in his first game as a Premiership player: he was instrumental in setting up the first goal, had a scary run just after the restart from halftime, and put excellent closing pressure onto the Gunners to defend.

He was taken off at the 70', likely predetermined by Moyes. I suspect both Moyes and LD would have liked to keep him out on the pitch a bit longer...

He is not completely in phase with the other players, appeared to be in different places than the other players expected and the like, but all in all a good performance given he only met the guys on Monday...

Donovan in interview says it was "fun".
"Everton loanee Landon Donovan says he enjoyed his first taste of English football, despite the snowy conditions, as his side drew 2-2 with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium."

Just saw Donovan on the highlights and the little they showed of him he looked good. The pundits, (Alan Hansen and Mark (****) Lawrensen), said he played very well. Could be a good loanee for Everton.

Edited to spell Donovan's name correctly!

    MLS Draft today!

    Very exciting!

OK, not really. It's sort of like if Championship and Premier League got a chance to poach 3 players from League 1 and below, in turns starting in the 1st round with whoever finished last in the Championship without being relegated and going down to whoever won the league in the Prem, then starting over and repeating.

It's a chance to focus on upcoming talent just entering the league from college and talk about positional needs on each team. US soccer scouting is so terrible, the correlation between pick # and success in the league is usually NOT STRONG. That happens in the NFL and NBA too, but it is much less accurate a barometer of future success in the MLS.

LA has only 2 picks...the second to last pick in the 1st round (since LA was runner up in the MLS Cup) and a 3rd round pick. Ben's Philly Union has 3 first round picks and as an expansion team needs bodies in every position.

The MLS Draft is being held in Philadephia this year, just FYI.

Mls draft is just a bit more exciting then the nfl draft... but i can't complain with 4 picks and a Brazilian..

Ben, how'd you like the Union's draft?

By the way, please form a supporters group called the Union Ultras just to **** off Chivas fans. I really like the Philly kits. Any chance of getting out to LA for the 1st LA/Philly match here?

Galaxy pick up Cletus, aka Clint Mathis...again.

Really looking forward to watching a soccer game on tv for the first time in a long time: Donovan's home debut with Everton against Manchester City. It's at 9:30 which means I will TOTALLY be awake for for a change.

A blast from the past...Cobi Jones gets the LA Riot Squad's Player of the Year award.

    (Spot the Fitz yet?)

EDIT: Note this is the 2006 Player of the Year award, pre-English guy color change.

i can usually get the last ten minutes of a game but waking up to watch from the beginning? you are heroic to say the least.

and whats with matey boy in the jacket and jeans at the bottom left? a peroxided riot squad presidente?

Yes, one of the founders, Tommy Mack on the left. Jeff Skinner iis to the left of Cobi and Eddie Garcia to the right.

Eddie is the graphic designer behind the LARS shirts, scarves and website.
Skinner is the behind the scenes guy that actually gets things done.
Tommy is the guy who comes up with ridiculous ideas like 50 sex dolls dressed as Chivas cheerleaders in Sec 138, and I believe credit (blame?) for the name "LA Riot Squad" goes to Mack.

There were others around since day one of LARS in 2001, but the whole thing was pretty much their idea.

As for last week's Everton game, it was very tough. Thanks be to God that the match started at 9:30am today. Very reasonable!

Sort of curious to see how Dynamo and 2nd string USA middie Stuart Holden will do at Bolton. I don't think he can have as great an impact as LD has at EFC, but I hope he at least shows well.
