    Deserves him right.

In the politically correct world we live in he won't get away with that.

Why has it taken so long to charge the tool?

don't pi$$ around with fines or touchline bans that don't hurt the club or individual, only one punishment is correct in this instance a 25 point deduction should suffice.

25 points??? automatic relegation to league 2 would be my punishment for him and luton for employing such a morally abject man (use the term man loosely) ;)

Straight relegation to league 2 is no fun.

At least with my way we get to see them suffer for a few months and can have a good laugh at them.

Yea but my way we get to get edwards for next to nothing as he will be worth alot less as a league two player and we get to laugh at them for a few years as they struggle to get back up after losing all the players that wont play in league 2... eitehr way though we would get a few chuckles out of it i guess... lol :D

    True :)

judging by what Nick said about Edwards v the saints i am not so sure i want him now anyway.

True, but to my mind he is the most likely of all the rumours bandied around that we will get.
He knows how to score which is something we need and is a good player to the most part, wether he would be able to bring it to the prem is another matter of course.

He was quick to apologise, should have been the end of the matter.

Ooops .... I'm sorry I forgot we live in "Nanny State UK" lts hang draw and quarter him for having the bottle to say waht most of the football world were thinking.

While we're about it let every Watford fan jump on the bandwagon, not because of the offence, but because he is the Luton Town manager ...... how original

So what you are saying is that if a player, manager or the supporters of a club are racist so long as they apologise quickly they shouldnt be chastised for it?
Sexism(which is what it was) is considered as bad as racism and should be treated as so... if he had said what are they doing having a black man in charge of the game he would have got the same and everyone would have said rightly so.

As a country we seem to over react to these things, yes he was wrong, but he apologised so IMO that should be the end of the matter.

Nothing to do with the fact it was Mike Newell, though I believe that he is a good manager.

Totally agree about the country has gone PC mad, but for newell I will make an exception.

he was out of order and as such should now be punished (preferably the heavier the better  )

If you kill someone if you apologise should you escape punishment?

Did he only apologise because the club forced him in to it and by doing so he tried to take the heat off and get a lighter punishment should he of been charged with an offence?

I like people who say what they think, the George Gallaways of this world. I may not always agree with what they say but they stimulate debate and IMO that can only be a good thing.

If we keep on castigating people when they step over the mark things will get so sanitised that you may as well issue an FA approved press release for each manager after every match.

Is that the 'most of the football world' who, week-in, week-out are screaming at the males running the line that they don't know what they are doing, should familiarise themselves with the laws of the game, learn the offside rule and go to specsavers, were thinking the same as Mike Newell?

I absolutely agree that things are a bit too PC crazy these days, but the fact of the matter is that that is the way it is, and everyone has to be treated the same.

No matter what, that person was there to do a job, and fair enough, slate her if she wasnt doing it right, but for that reason. Dont bring gender, race or anything else into it.

The fact is there are rules against such conduct and they should be applied, regardless of the person concerned. He made an attack on an official, that is unacceptable and he will rightly be fined. It's nothing to do with political correctness or whether someone says sorry or not.

No one is stopping Mike Newell saying what he thinks Budfrog, so your Orwellian vision of sanitised press releases is a distant fallacy. However, the fact remains that managers are not there to "stimulate debate" or discuss women's issues or anything else for that matter. They are there to manage a football team. Frankly I don't want to hear Mike Newell's outlook on society any more than I give a flying fark what Aidy thinks about the European single currency or maybe what impact Wenger considers the lack of resources for science teachers to have on the physics curriculum.

Everyone is entitled to their viewpoints - his was badly made. His 'stimulation of debate' (read: rant) has probably put all female officials outside of professional football in increased danger of even more direct abuse from big thick oafs on a Sunday morning. You see what a manager says one week translates onto the Sunday League pitch the next - you'd be truly surprised about the impact if you could grasp the extent to which this occurs. He had a responsibility and he neglected that.

Aside from that, I'm not sure if I blame MN entirely for the saga because as per usual the media picked up on a non-story and turned it into a spurious back page article. That said maybe he deserves to be punished for simply lacking the acumen to make his statement calmly...

Gross misuse of the least meaningful phrase in society - 'political correctness gone mad.' If MN wants to judge the referee's merits on the criteria of having a pair of testicles, then he deserves to be punished and he shouldn't be defended on the basis of it being 'PC'.

Whilst Newell, was clearly daft to express himself in the way he did, due to his priviledged position (if you can call managing that crowd a priviledge), and responsibility to the game etc.

This female evidently doesn`t have a great reputation for `acceptable refereeing performances` in the lower leagues, and if he had aimed his fire at the selection process that has enhanced her career he would have been on safer ground (other than the Football Grandees would have fined him anyway for bringing the game into disrepute).

Uriah Rennie took a lot of stick for sub standard performances and was eventually demoted (and subsequently promoted) and the fear is that like the police force they are operating positive descrimination to boost the standing of minorities over competence to do the job.
